What is AKC Trick Dog?

AKC Trick Dog is a title program where dogs earn titles by performing a set number of tricks. You choose tricks from an approved list, practice them until they are reliable, then have them evaluated or submitted through the proper process for your level.

A title program based on tricks

You earn titles by completing required numbers of tricks.

Easy to do at home

Most tricks can be trained in your living room with minimal equipment.

Great for building focus and teamwork

Tricks teach your dog to listen, think, and work with you.

Clear levels and goals

As you move up, you add skills, reliability, and variety.

Fun for dogs of many ages

Puppies, adult dogs, and seniors can all participate with age-appropriate tricks.

A strong “gateway” into dog sports

Many teams start here, then branch into rally, obedience, agility, or scent sports.

Is AKC Trick Dog Right for Your Dog?

If your dog likes training sessions and food or toys, trick training is a great match.

Teams who want a low barrier title

No special facility needed. You can train and build your list at home.

People who want a flexible sport

You can train in short sessions, choose tricks that fit your dog, and work at your own pace.

Getting started

How to start AKC Trick Dog

You do not need a complicated plan. Start small, build confidence, and keep sessions short and fun.
  1. Pick a reward your dog loves
Food, toys, or both. Motivation makes tricks easier.

  2. Start with simple foundation tricks
Things like hand target, spin, sit, down, and touch build confidence fast.

  3. Train in short sessions
Two to five minutes is plenty, especially for beginners.

  4. Add a cue only after your dog understands
Teach the movement first, then name it.

  5. Practice in a few different locations
A trick that works in the kitchen should also work in the yard.

  6. Build your trick list with variety
Mix body awareness tricks, movement tricks, and calm stationary tricks.
