What a neutral dog actually does

Birch has the most important job at Northbound K9. Mostly, it involves sniffing grass and ignoring other dogs.
A neutral dog is a calm, steady dog who can stay relaxed while a reactive dog practices nearby. They don't react back, they don't stare, and they don't try to greet. That predictability lets us set up controlled, repeatable practice that's very hard to get on a real street.
How a session works
- We start far away, well under your dog's threshold
- Birch sniffs, walks or lies down on cue, staying predictable
- Your dog notices her, gets rewarded, and stays calm
- We slowly change distance, angle and movement over many sessions
- Birch gets frequent breaks, because her welfare matters too
Why Birch is good at it
Birch was once a very reactive dog herself. Years of patient work made her one of the calmest dogs we know. She's a reminder for every family we meet that real change is possible.
Field sessions with Birch are included in the Northbound Program.
