A woman walking a dog on a snowy city sidewalk

Sound familiar?

You plan walks around empty streets and odd hours.

You cross the road when you see another dog. You've stopped having friends over. You love your dog, and you're exhausted.

You're not a bad owner, and you don't have a bad dog. Reactivity is one of the most common reasons good dogs are rehomed, and one of the most improvable. With a clear plan, most dogs learn to stay calm around the things that used to overwhelm them.

Understanding threshold

Distance changes everything.

Drag the slider to bring your dog closer to a trigger. Every reactive dog has a "threshold," the point where they stop thinking and start reacting. Training happens on the calm side of it.

Under threshold: the learning zone

What you'll see

What we do here

Our approach

Reinforcement first. Balanced by design.

We teach dogs what to do before we ever ask them to stop doing something. Every tool is explained, and your dog's well-being always comes first.

A foundation built with rewards

Food, play, praise and freedom build focus, trust and calm. Most of the work happens here.

Fair, clear communication

Once a dog truly understands, calm and proportional feedback helps them make good choices. It's never given in anger.

We never correct fear

A frightened dog needs to feel safe first. We change how they feel before we ask for different behavior.

Birch, a shepherd mix, walking calmly across a grassy field

Maren Lindqvist spent nine years as an emergency veterinary technician in St. Paul. Night after night she met dogs who weren't "bad." They were overwhelmed. Then she adopted Birch, a shepherd mix who screamed at every dog on the Midtown Greenway.

Helping Birch changed her career. Today Birch is the calm "neutral dog" other reactive dogs practice around.

“A reactive dog isn’t a bad dog. She’s a dog who needs a clearer, kinder plan. That’s the plan I build for every family.”

Maren Lindqvist, IACP CDTA
