Good questions,straight answers

Everything families ask us on the phone, from vaccines to visiting days to how we use training tools. Can't find yours? Call us at (859) 555-0147.

Before you book

Is board & train right for my dog?

It's a great fit for puppies and family dogs who need solid manners: leash walking, greetings, doors, recall and settling. It's not the right choice for dogs with serious aggression toward people or a bite history. We'll refer those families to a behavior specialist. Dog reactivity is assessed case by case at the evaluation.

How old does my dog need to be?

Puppy Foundations takes puppies from 12 to 24 weeks, once they've had at least two rounds of DHPP vaccines. Manners & Freedom starts at 6 months, and Off-Leash Ready at 8 months. There's no upper age limit. We've had a 9-year-old graduate.

What vaccines and records do you need?

Rabies (from 16 weeks), DHPP, Bordetella, a negative fecal test within six months and current flea and tick prevention. Bring the records to your evaluation, or have your vet email them to us.

Why is there an evaluation first?

So we can meet your dog, check that board & train is the right fit and recommend a program. It's $95, takes 60 minutes, and is credited to your program if you book.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to six weeks is typical. Spring and early fall fill first, so book 8 to 10 weeks ahead for those months.

While your dog is here

Will my dog forget me, or be sad?

No. Dogs settle into the farm routine within a couple of days, and our welfare logs track appetite, sleep and stress every day. Families are often surprised by how happy their dog looks in the daily videos. And go-home day is a very joyful reunion.

Can I visit?

Yes. You're welcome to visit once during week two. We ask families not to visit in week one, because it resets the settling-in process.

What should I pack?

Your dog's food (or we'll feed our own), one bed or blanket that smells like home, any medications and your dog's collar. We provide everything else: leashes, bowls, toys, chews and treats.

Who will train my dog?

One named trainer, from drop-off to go-home. Hannah oversees every dog's plan, and she or your trainer teaches your go-home lesson.

What if my dog gets sick or hurt?

We call you right away and take your dog to our partner clinic in Versailles, eight minutes away. For emergencies, the 24-hour hospital in Lexington is 20 minutes away.

How we train

What training methods do you use?

We're balanced trainers built on a positive-reinforcement foundation. Rewards like food, play, praise and freedom teach every new skill. Once a dog clearly understands a behavior, we may add calm, fair, proportional feedback so the behavior holds up around distractions. Feedback is never given in anger, and we never correct a fearful dog.

Do you use training tools?

Sometimes, and never without your agreement. If we think a training tool would help your dog, we'll explain why at the evaluation or during the program. We'll show you exactly how it fits and works, and teach you to use it at the go-home lesson. Many dogs never need one, and the goal is always to fade it out. Anything we use is listed on your report card.

Will I see how you train?

Yes, all of it. You'll get daily video clips, a written report card each week, and an open invitation to visit during week two. Nothing happens behind closed doors.

Do you guarantee results?

We don't make guarantees about behavior. Dogs aren't machines, and results depend a lot on what happens at home. What we do promise: if your dog isn't where we expect at the end of the program, we'll tell you before go-home day and make a plan with you. And you get six months of follow-up support either way.

After go-home day

What happens if my dog slips back at home?

It's normal for a dog to test the rules in the first couple of weeks. Text your trainer a video. Most slips are a two-minute fix. You also have two private follow-up lessons and monthly Alumni Field Days.

What are Alumni Field Days?

Saturday mornings on the farm, once a month, free for graduates. We do group practice with real distractions, then a long walk to the creek, then coffee.

Can my dog come back later?

Yes. Graduates can book tune-up stays at $95 a night (2 night minimum). They're perfect before a new baby, a move, or when you just want a refresher.
