What is treibball?

The game, explained

Treibball (German for “drive ball”) started in Germany as a herding sport for dogs without sheep. Eight large exercise balls sit in a triangle. From a fixed spot, you direct your dog to drive each ball into a goal, one at a time, against the clock.

It rewards brains and teamwork more than speed, which makes it a great outlet for herding breeds, busy dogs who need a job, and dogs who shouldn't jump.

How a run works

Four steps to a Q

Here is what happens from the moment you walk into the ring.

Stay in your zone

Handlers stand in front of the goal and direct from there.

Send the outrun

Your dog runs out and around the triangle of eight balls.

Steer with cues

Left, right, stop and push. The dog drives each ball toward you.

Goal!

Greta grew up near Stuttgart, played Treibball before most Americans had heard of it, and brought it to Indiana in 2021. Fritz, her Bearded Collie, would push a ball across the county if you let him.

Quick questions

Do we need to buy the balls?

No. We have every size from 45 to 75 cm, matched to your dog's height.

Is it only for herding breeds?

No. Herding dogs love it, but Labs, terriers and mixes all do well. It's about teamwork, not instinct.
