Why tired dogs need Rest Hour

"Won't my dog just sleep all day?" It's the most common question we get about Rest Hour. The honest answer: for 90 minutes, yes. And that's exactly the point.

Dogs need more sleep than we think

Adult dogs sleep 12 to 14 hours a day, and puppies and seniors even more. A day of nonstop group play without a break leaves many dogs overtired, which looks a lot like a toddler who skipped a nap: grumpy, mouthy and quick to snap.

More play isn't better play

Overstimulated dogs play rougher and listen less. Most scuffles at daycares happen late in the day, when dogs have been "on" for hours. Rest Hour resets the whole camp, so the afternoon is as happy as the morning.

At Camp Barkley: Rest Hour runs every day from 12:30 to 2:00. The lights go low, soft music plays, and every camper settles on a raised cot. Counselors stay with each cabin the whole time.

What families notice

Most families tell us their dogs come home relaxed instead of frazzled, and sleep better at night. Plenty of campers even earn the Nap Champion badge in their first two weeks.
